Open or closed multideck refrigerated display? Find out the pros and cons.

Apr 24, 2023

Multideck refrigerated displays are one of the most important items of equipment in grocery shops. They appear mainly in large-format facilities, but are also often found in smaller stores. Their unquestionable advantage is that they can display a large assortment of goods in a relatively small space. However, many customers ask themselves whether they should opt for an open or closed model.

In this article, we will try to explain the advantages and disadvantages of both versions.

Multideck refrigerated displays without doors

displays without doors are most commonly found in hypermarkets. They usually form long lines, grouped together in one area of the shop. Their biggest advantage is that they offer good display and easy accessibility to the goods placed in them for the customer - the products are clearly visible and literally within arm's reach. This will be appreciated by customers who often do not use baskets and move around the shop with loads of articles, which makes it difficult, for example, to open the door of a refrigerated device. It is also easier to place goods on the shelves of an open shelving unit. However, this convenience comes at a price, directly related to the cost of electricity - open shelving units consume on average 40% more electricity than their counterparts with doors.

In addition, the low temperature prevailing in 'refrigerated aisles' with open refrigerated displays can cause discomfort in summer when people are wearing thin clothing. When they are freezing they will shorten their shopping time in this area to the minimum necessary and thus fewer products will end up in their basket.

Multideck refrigerated displays with door

Closed multideck refrigerated displays, especially those with sliding doors, usually appear in smaller shops, but larger markets are also increasingly opting for them. The main argument for choosing a device with doors is the significantly lower electricity consumption. The goods are also less exposed to the changing conditions outside the device.

Another advantage is that the closed display gets far less dust, so the frequency of cleaning can be lower than with open shelving. At the same time, closed devices are less convenient to clean and more difficult to place goods in. A closed display may also discourage some customers from buying, as it puts a barrier between them and the product.

In addition, the product range is not as visible in this case as in open display, so some shoppers may abandon their purchase if they do not quickly find the goods they are interested in. It is also worth noting that shelving units with swinging doors require a little more space in the shop to be able to open them freely, without blocking the aisle.

As you can see from the list above, both open and closed display have their advantages and disadvantages and it is difficult to make a clear judgement on which option is better. The choice should be based on individual needs and shop conditions.
